Polystyrene Foam Plastic Packaging Material and Its Testing

Polystyrene material was invented and synthesized by ESimon in 1839. Since 1925, the polystyrene foam food container production line began to produce in batches in the United States. The advantages of this material are low price, good surface finish, good impact resistance of inner packaging matched with cartons, easy injection molding, low specific gravity and light weight. The disadvantages are brittleness, static electricity and non-degradability.

Polystyrene foam is divided into two categories: one is the open hole material (thick plate, cylindrical profile). The second is obturator material (which can be made into any shape). Today, this material has become one of the most widely used plastics. This paper only deals with the properties and testing of this material.

The production process of polystyrene foam was developed in Japan in the middle of 1950s. Closed cell polystyrene foam is made from polystyrene particles containing petroleum ether or pentane through foaming process.


The test of polystyrene foam packaging material in the polystyrene foam food container production line is a necessary means to ensure its quality. In the testing work, there are mainly client's Commission inspection and directive spot inspection. The inspection is based on the industry standard QB/T1649-1992 "Polystyrene Foam Plastic Packaging Material" promulgated by Ministry of Light I in 1992. According to this standard, the inspection items of polystyrene foam packaging materials in the polystyrene foam food container production line mainly include: appearance inspection, apparent density deviation, compressive strength, fracture bending load, dimensional stability and moisture content.
